We all multi-task. You eat and drive, walk and text, and Tweet and watch TV.
Whether it’s a live sporting event, award show or primetime TV, Twitter has become the place to hear, and share, things first. Everyone is online, even families living in rural areas because they have Internet options like

In those short 160 characters of a Tweet, fans (or non-fans) of TV shows sound off on plot points, wardrobes, guest stars, failures and triumphs. From opening to closing credits, Twitter is a huge window into how shows are performing, straight from the people that watch them.
Because Twitter has made such an impact on TV viewers, Nielsen, the leader in all TV viewership statistics, is making a Nielsen Twitter TV Rating.
This rating won’t be implemented until the fall, but is expected to give advertisers and TV programmers a better look at just how large their audience is.
Instead of a typical rating which only takes into account tuned-in viewers, this Twitter version takes into account the amount of Twitter users actively discussing the show, plus everyone affected by the TV-themed tweets.
Twitter is already a platform for groups, advertisers and celebrities to promote their projects, and if Twitter is not an official part of the Nielsen ratings, promotion of shows is likely to jump.
Look for the new Nielsen rating to come out later this year, and see if you notice a difference in how advertisers use Twitter to engage with consumers.
